Vento Norte builds wind farms in the north of Portugal. Instead of turbines we filmed what they wait for: wind moving through a hayfield, close enough to see each stalk bend and high enough to see it write across the whole field.

Not one turbine

Vento Norte builds wind farms in the hills of the north and wanted a film for its new site that people would watch to the end. Every energy film we looked at had the same turbines against the same sunset.

Close and high

We filmed a hayfield near Montalegre in the windiest week of the year. Close up, each stalk bends and springs back; from the drone, the gusts comb the whole field into lines that look like handwriting. The track through the middle was already there.

Where it runs

The film opens Vento Norte’s website and plays at its village meetings before anyone mentions a turbine. People watch ninety seconds of it on average, and it lasts two minutes.
